Background

PhD (Concordia University, Montreal, Canada), MBA (Bond University, Gold Coast, Australia), BSc (Hon) (University of Ceylon)

Dr Wickramasinghe (Wasa) is the Laboratory Manager of Entox and also a Senior Research Fellow. Wasa's research is on algal toxins, their chemistry and toxicology.

Algal toxins and their degradation products, when present in drinking water, have a deleterious effect upon human health and need to be removed before the water is consumed. Wasa’s interests are to develop sensitive analytical techniques to quantify these toxins and removal of these toxins from drinking water by various techniques including Chlorination, Ozonation and Photocatalytic Oxidation.

After completing a PhD in Bioinorganic and Analytical Chemistry, Wasa joined the Australian National University as a Post Doctoral Fellow. While attached to the Research School of Chemistry at ANU and in collaboration with Australian Nuclear Science & Technology Organisation, Wasa studied Steric Interactions of Transition Metal Hydrido Complexes by single Crystal Neutron and X-ray diffraction techniques and evaluated steric effects on packing of these materials. Metal hydrides play a key role in energy conversion schemes including proposed nuclear fusion schemes. Wasa moved to the University of Queensland in 1992 after a brief stay at Bond University.

Wasa has extensive experience in isolation, purification and structure elucidation of various chemical and biochemicals of different origin. He has been working in the field of environmental toxicology for over eight years. His research interests include structure and function of natural toxins and the health risks associated with them. Wasa has many years of experience in techniques such as immuno-assays, manipulation of proteins and peptides, purification of various chemical and biochemical compounds including proteins and quantitative evaluation of ligand-protein interactions. He also has an excellent background in modern analytical instrumentation including HPLC, LC/MS, NMR, UV-Vis, FTIR, AAS and X-ray techniques.
